Michael Evenson

Fall 2011 Citizen of the Season

The Citizen of the Season award for Fall, 2011 goes to Michael Evenson for his permanent performance as the best volunteer around, bar none. He was nominated by Julie Hancock, who said this:
“Michael wears many hats. When I first met him he was a wonderful massage therapist. Currently he teaches art at Hurricane High School, is a loving husband, father of two boys, musician and volunteer at many community events. During the summer months he looks for ways to give back to his home communities of Rockville and Springdale. For the past three years Michael has been an extraordinary volunteer at the Zion Canyon Music Festival. He gladly stays all day and until the festival ends at night filling water containers, dumping trash and recycling. He does it with a friendly fun loving attitude and has become an integral part of the festival.

In June, 2010 he signed up to volunteer at the Springdale Branch library.  He quickly learned all that needed to be done and doesn’t hesitate to jump on it when he comes to work in the library.  Michael has become a valuable member of the library team.  He enjoys work at the library so much now that school has started he still makes every effort to come in at least once each week.

Michael helps coordinate musicians to play at the Farmers Market during the summer and is always available when volunteers are needed for other events like Earth Day.  He volunteers with grace, humor and love of the community.
We are fortunate to have him as our neighbor.”

Michael and his family live in Rockville, where he moved in 1992 after marrying Kristine. They have two sons, Serren (16) and Kristian (14).

Other volunteer roles he plays or has played: YAZ presenter, Rockville Town Council, Rockville Pipeline Company, Z-Arts! Performing Arts Co-chair, Butch Cassidy Run, and ‘Man with Apron’ at the Z-arts! Crafts Fair Bake Sale table.  Michael says this about volunteering: “The thing about small towns is - people need to help with everything. I help with the things I love to do.”

Michael is the Ceramics/Sculpture teacher at Hurricane High School and has been an Adjunct at Dixie State College Arts Department.
