Citizen Of The Season
Summer 2011
The Citizen of the Season award for Summer, 2011 goes to Christine and James Wolken for their outstanding performance as foster parents to a series of homeless dogs. As Chief Wright stated in his nomination letter, James and Christine have been generous enough to foster dogs for the police department during the past several months. They’ve refused to accept any money from the Town for food or care of these animals. They have incurred damages to the interior of their residence due to the fostering of these animals, and have again refused any reimbursement from the Town. They have bathed, groomed, and exercised these animals on a daily basis during the entire time they had possession of them. All the dogs that they have fostered have been successfully adopted out to loving families. Also, they never hesitate to assist with working with the animals at the shelter. They took it upon themselves to initiate this service by contacting the town office.
Christine works as a manager at Worthington Gallery and James is a restaurant manager at the Spotted Dog. Christine is serving on the Springdale Planning Commission for the second time. They have lived in Springdale since 1999; they love being here. They came here after college then left for a few years to save money to buy property here. They returned and bought a charming home in Sol Town.
Christine said they are very honored by this award, especially because it is about their love of animals, which is ‘non-political’. She said the ‘real heroes’ are the people who took these pets home and made a life-time commitment to them. She thanks them. She also thanks Chief Wright. ‘He personifies the true meaning of peace officer. His compassion for human and animal is personally inspirational.'
